This sounds really weird to me; shouldn't it be "He was absent from class?"

A little antiquated, but still valid.
Pronounced 'ab-SENT' it means 'to keep away (from)'.

Oh, I guess you're right. Still, if a foreign language learner said this in a conversation, it would be very unfortunate. Also, very few online dictionaries seem to give a verb definition for "absent".
