两个 needs to be changed to 两通, because 两个 would mean two phones and 两通 is for two times, so person called twice, not called with two phones, 两次 would also be fine.

all this chinese sentences which are coupled with a Shanghainese are actually not from me but an import of sentences given by a Chinese website to learn Shanghainese (so it was written by natives)

I asked several of my chinese friends (I currently live in China), and they all gave me the same answer

=> if you want to speak a perfect chinese, yes it should be 两通
=> orally speaking, most of people will say 两个 , as with the context no one will confuse

Fair enough. I should have mentioned that the comment actually came from my Taiwanese/Chinese language exchange partner, who I was screen sharing with and going over sentences when we saw that sentence. I also consulted with another Taiwanese, Chinese native speaker and she said that they never say 兩個 here in Taiwan for that. So must be difference between the way Taiwanese and Chinese say it. So yup, never mind. Maybe can create another sentence with the alternative usage.
