For non-native speakers: "frohe Kunde" is a rather rare expression, not used in common daily discourse at all. One could use the sentence for example when hearing of the birth of a child or that somebody has passed an exam, and one wants to pass this on. The expression is a bit flowery, probably more suited for a female than for a male speaker. Or so it seems to me.
"vernommen" is on the same stylistic level as "frohe Kunde", meaning "gehört".
