
I ran the Japanese through Google Translate and it came up with a perfect English sentence "He is a formidable opponent"
The original sentence is very slangy and is equivalent to "He is a hard nut to crack." My thinking was this: If both the English and Japanese are original sentences then chances are that the slangy one is the translation of the more formal one.
