I only stumbled over this funny word "quiproquo" and searched for a good translation.
"quiproquo" is indeed midway between "malentendu" et "confusion". It's often used when the misunderstanding drags on a bit and is very popular in boulevard theater, like, for instance, a character believes he's speaking to someone and it is later revealed it's someone else. It's not total confusion, though...
I think french "confusion" tends to be messier than the english "confusion"...
