Are you saying that linked sentences have to match each other in every possible case? I think this is too high a bar. "Are you going to show me what you've bought?" can also be, and most likely is a request in most cases.

I don't think Americans would consider ""Are you going to show me...?" a request form.

I didn't know that. It definitely can be in British English. Context and intonation would make it clear, too.
