TRANG
I created Tatoeba. I used to love learning languages and Tatoeba is the result of this passion. It was initially just an experimental project which I started back in 2006 and did as a hobby. But somehow, with a lot of patience and dedication, it became quite successful :)
If you are interested to know how it all started, I once wrote a blog post about it: https://blog.tatoeba.org/2013/0...f-tatoeba.html
There's probably a lot more I can say but I don't want to write a whole novel here. Feel free to contact me in a private message or by email (trang@tatoeba.org) if there's anything in particular that you are curious about. I will try my best to take the time to answer.
※※ My role in Tatoeba ※※
Even though I have the "admin" status, please be aware that I barely do any admin work anymore. I'm more of a backup admin. I have delegated most of the admin tasks to other members. I also don't contribute anymore to the corpus and I don't do any corpus maintenance contrary the other active admins. Most of my time and energy goes into the development, management and governance of Tatoeba.
Don't hesitate to contact me if there is any fundamental problem that you think should be addressed. I cannot promise I will be able to fix it (some problems take a lot of time), but I can work towards a solution.
I am the president of the "Association Tatoeba", which is a French non-profit organization that I founded in 2011. The main purpose of this organization is to support the development of Tatoeba.
It may be counter intuitive but I am a volunteer in Tatoeba. I am not an employee of my organization. Everything I've done and everything I do, I do it my free time. Tatoeba does receive some donations and, in the past few of years, also received some funding from Mozilla through the "Mozilla Open Source Support" program, but none of it goes into my pocket.
※※ Hopes and dreams ※※
I wouldn't be able to describe properly right here and right now what is the Tatoeba that I dream of, but I can say that we're still far from it. I still have a lot of ideas – too many ideas – probably enough to keep myself busy for the next two or three centuries. And I'm not the only one with big dreams.
If you see a bit of your dreams in Tatoeba, then I wholeheartedly invite you to join us in making this project grow day after day into a wonderful tool that helps everyone around the world understand and learn languages.
I will probably be involved in Tatoeba be through my whole life but I hope I can one day leave this into the hands of passionate and amazing people, and just get back to what initially led me to start it all: learning languages. I'd still love to become fluent in a few more languages in my lifetime.
※※ My philosophy ※※
Sharing is caring. Embrace diversity. Take your time. Do what you enjoy. Just be yourself. It's all about finding the right balance.
Those are briefly some of the principles that I live by and that have shaped Tatoeba, in some way or another.
※※ Some random details ※※
My username (TRANG) is uppercase because in the early days of Tatoeba, every username was uppercase. I kept it like that as a legacy, because I never really bothered changing it to "Trang". If you have to mention my name in a message, please don't feel obligated to go all uppercase. Just "Trang" is fine.
If you ever find yourself wondering which pronoun you should use to refer to me, "she"/"her" is the most common way. I however wouldn't be offended at all if you referred to me as "he"/"him" or "they"/"them". In the end I just self-identify as a simple human being.
Pour ceux qui parlent français, vous pouvez me tutoyer. Ça ne me dérange pas du tout.
Thank you for reading till the end! :)
