What is the status of furigana support for Japanese?

I don't mean to say "Go fix it right now!", but rather to ask whether there is some tentative schedule on when it might be fixed. That would give me a sense of whether I need to find a substitute resource or whether I can wait patiently for this one.

What I used to do was copy/paste sentences from Tatoeba into my Anki deck. Because the furigana was there was well, it was easy for me to put the Japanese sentence without kana on the front and the phonetic reading on the back.

I can use a dictionary or Rikaichan to find out the readings of the words one at a time, but unfortunately this adds a lot of time creating each flash card. Hmm...

If you describe the following in a private message to me:

- a description of the problem (in a form that even someone who is unfamiliar with Japanese will understand)
- an example (with sentence number, etc.)
- when it was working and when it stopped working

then I can write it up as a bug report ticket. Don't be surprised if it doesn't get fixed for a long time, but if the bug fixing pipeline ever gets started again, it will be a good thing to have this in the list.

AlanF_US:

The problem here is well known to anyone who used to use Japanese on Tatoeba.

The short version is: "Furigana is no longer shown for Japanese."

For Japanese and other languages with character sets as opposed to alphabets, when people are learning the languages, we start with a phonetic alphabet. This is often written in small letters just above the actual text. These small letters are called "rubies", and for Japanese specifically, the phonetic reading written adjacent to a word is called "furigana". Before the server trouble at the end of 2013, Tatoeba showed furigana (albeit with some errors).

Whether it is worth the admins' time to work on re-enabling furigana support is an open question. If there are other high quality free resources that work well in replacement of it, perhaps it is not necessary. Rikaichan works well as long as you are reading everything from within your web browser.

By the way, NO transcriptions are shown at all, neither Cantonese, nor Mandarin, nor Uzbek, nor Georgian.

Trang says it's going to take a while to fix this, since we need to find a developer who can tackle it.

Are there any sites anyone can recommend where I can paste a sentence in Japanese and get kana back? For example, http://nihongo.j-talk.com/ does the trick, but it has *many* mistakes.
