to my knowledge, The seems to be always translated by 这封信 , as it seems by default Chinese would consider a word like this as plural and undefined.

actually I had this discussion some days ago on this sentence http://tatoeba.org/fre/sentence...35873#comments that was first translated without determinant before, (I used to discuss about it orally and in French so unfortunately I can't link to all what we said :( )
