Shouldn't that full stop at the end of the direct speech be a comma?
I've put a comma at the end of the bit in quotes but am not convinced it is right as this is a stand-alone statement, with no other dialogue following (just a soft kiss). To my mind, it would be like putting a comma at the end of a sentence. ??
The direct speech is part of the whole sentence rather than a stand-alone sentence by itself. Therefore, the full stop is put at the end of the whole sentence, and the direct speech is followed by a comma, a question mark, or an exclamation mark before the closing quotation mark.
Quotation marks are similar to italics in that they are just a form of displaying text. The other punctuation marks must be such that they still fit even if the quotation marks are left out. In some texts, which include at least some translations of the Bible, that is even standard. In them, quotation marks are not used at all. (The German orthography reformers didn’t understand that, but it’s still true in English and most other European languages, I think.) ☺
Thanks for that. Tatoeba, a good place to learn about one's own language!
