
I think there's two issues with the Chinese 你在监狱做什么: (a) it lacks a Chinese question mark (i.e., ?), and (b) I may be wrong, but I don't believe it corresponds to the English here; I think it means "What do you do in prison?"
I would expect the Chinese for "What were you in prison for?" to be something like 你为什么在监狱里? or 你是因为什么入了狱? There's a bunch of ways of phrasing it.
