Even if this maybe a popular error, it's an error nevertheless; it was the Soviet Union who launched Sputnik 1, not Russia. Almost on half of the inhabitants of the Soviet Union were non-russians. It would be offensiv to ignore the contribution they have made or had to make.

Oh yes! In 1957, Russia only was a part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. But also you could say Soviet Union.
