There are two ways to say "Are you Japanese?":
1. Είσαι Ιάπωνας;
2. Είσαι Γιαπωνέζος;
But you couldn't say "εισαι ιαπωνικος". A car or a washing machine or a language can be "ιαπωνικός, -ή, -ό" but not a person.
You would say: "ένας Ιάπωνας ποιητής" (a Japanese poet) and not "ενας ιαπωνικος ποιητής". That's probably a very greek characteristic.
