I would say:
お客様がたくさんいました。そのほとんどが先生のクラスメートか友達でした。

The English is past tense.

多い sounds a little too weak as a transaltion. For "most of them", we say そのほとんど、その大部分、その大多数

Though its use is not rare, I avoid the form クラスメートと友達 because it can be misundesrood to mean they were friends of the classmates.
