Pourquoi tout le monde traduit cette phrase au passé? ない est intemporel, non?

C'est l'auteur de la phrase japonaise, bunbuku, qui a traduit l'anglais "I couldn't stand looking at it." (#383861) de la sorte.
On le voit bien en regardant l'historique :
