"いやなこと" simply means things that you don't like, or things that disturb you. You would probably just say "worries" or "troubles" in english. Someone "turning to drink" often has the connotation of someone having become an alchoholic, in which case it is a one-off event. In the Japanese we also have "頼る" which means to rely on, thus this translation rather than use "turn to drink". In English "drink" in the expression above could just as easily be replaced with "alchohol" without significantly changing the meaning.
