По-моему перевод хороший.

«Be about to» буквально значит «собираться что-то делать». Т.е. буквально значит «солнце собирается скрываться», или, говоря нормальным языком, «солнце скоро скроется».

Ну, а раз оно скоро скроется, значит, оно «почти скрылось» — вполне уместное в переводе семантическое развитие.

В японском переводе "Только что солнце решило зайти(закатиться)".
В немецком вроде то же самое. Интересно, что в эсперанто.

Пожалуй, исправлю на "Солнце почти зашло."

И да, по смыслу получается "солнце подошло к закату". Исправлю-ка ещё раз. %)
