First, using 佢 twice in a sentence is perfectly okay and alternating between 佢 and 自己 is not necessary (on second thought, it actually makes the sentence a bit redundant).

Second, the 講咗 sounds a bit strange. When using reported speech in Cantonese, the past tense is normally unnecessary probably because it's obvious enough. 講咗 is only used in sentences like these:

佢講咗個故事俾我哋聽。
- He told us a story.
(not reported speech)

雖然佢講咗對唔住，但係我都仲係好嬲。
- Even though he apologised, I'm still very angry.
(the fact that the action has been done needs to be emphasised)

etc.

A more natural way to translate the English sentence would be 佢話佢好開心.
