You're right - technically speaking this sentence can mean 'I bought THE book yesterday' as well. But here 本書 is simply a contraction of 一本書 :-)

It really just depends on the context. =/
I guess I'll take 我尋日買咗本書 as an example. When this sentence is used as a bridge to a change in topic, it's far more likely for 本書 to mean 'a book' than 'THE book' (imagine two friends talking about, say, the weather when one of them suddenly feels like talking about reading: 'Hey! You know what? I bought a book yesterday'). However, when the sentence is brought up in the middle of a conversation about a certain book, you can be sure that the 本書 means 'THE book' rather than 'a book' (in this case, by the way, it is likely for the speaker to add in a final particle 喇 to emphasise the action of having bought the book).
