I think this sentence is here more to demonstrate the use of... well, demonstratives (este/ese/aquel, この/その/あの, etc.)
And maybe the best way to achieve its purpose as an English translation would be to use this/that (there)/that...over there.
So:
This dog and that fish (there) are mine, but that bird over there isn't.
That's just my opinion.
