"Mi pensis, ke ..." estas ecence la sama kiel nerekta parolo.
Transformado de rekta parolo en nerektan parolon en Esperanto ne ŝanĝas la verbon.
Do el
Mi pensis: "Ne estas tiel malfrue."
iĝas
Mi pensis, ke ne estas tiel malfrue.

Per aliaj vortoj: En tiaj frazoj la verbotempo en la subordita frazo rilatas al la tempo de la ago esprimita en la ĉefa frazo, ne al la tempo de la parolanto / leganto de la frazo.

Cetere vi povas diri: "Mi pensis, ke estis x."
sed sciu , ke tiu frazo signifas, ke x estis antaŭ la tempo en kiu vi pensis (antaŭpasinteco).
