Welchen Unterschied gibt es zwischen "nach" und "in", bitte?

Man sagt zwar: "Ich fahre nach Paris.", aber NICHT: Ich fahre IN Paris.
Wiederum sagt man aber: "Ich fahre in die Stadt" (au centre de la ville), oder (in anderem Zusammenhang): "Ich fahre in diese Stadt."
