We should use instrumental for "бутерброд", i.e. "бутербродом".

Actually, we, Russians, don't always call sandwich as "бетурброд". Sandwiches are just not as popular in Russia as бутерброды. :-) And, I think, German "Butterbrot" sounds much more natural (and much more easy to pronounce, as well) for Russians than English "sandwich". :-)

Your previous sentence was absolutely correct excluding wrong case of "бутерброд". I.e. "Cэндвич называется в России бутербродом." is absolutely acceptable. :-) If you want to reflect my previous comments in some sentence, it's possible to do it this way: "В России сэндвич часто называют бутербродом."
btw, in Russian its admissible to use both "сэндвич" and "сандвич".
