"Tack," I suppose, would have been "le mot juste." Tack is the stuff you need to put a horse to work--to ride, plow, or pull a carriage--and "harness" is tack for draft horses; but many will say harness who never heard of tack.
What I had in mind was the fancy "dress" of horses drawing carriages of patrons at Longchamp.
