<pay'> seems to imply that the occurrence is happening right at that moment, so the completion of <-pu'> seems inappropriate. Then English translation posted in the comments seems just as odd for exactly the same reason.

I don't really see the problem with combining {pay'} and -{pu'}; it's happened, and when it happened it was sudden.
That being said, since it only says "happened" and not "has happened", and comparing with Kruge's {naDev qaS wanI' ramqu'.}, I suppose removing the -{pu'} may indeed be best.
