
I'm not sure that "פרצה" is the right translation for "okazis" here. I think of "פרצה" as something more like "broke out" than "happened".

פרצה
is often used for wars, as wars don't just occur, they are triggered by something.
A better direct translation for "okazis" is
המלחמה חלה או המלחמה ארעה.
but it sounds somewhat unnatural.

Right. In addition, it's inaccurate to say (in 2013) that the war in Iraq "happened" ten years ago, when in fact it started ten years ago, but extended for eight years. By contrast, it's perfectly accurate to say that the war broke out ten years ago. I think the problem is in the Esperanto sentence. I left a comment there that "okazis" should be changed to "ekis" or "komenciĝis".
