Yes, "do as you are told" is common and "do it as you are told" is very rare (and sounds unnatural to me). Google Ngram Viewer won't allow searches of more than five words, but you can see that there are far fewer instances of "do it as you are X" than of "do as you are told", and if you look at individual instances of "X", you'll see that the great majority are not "told".
