I don't understand this sentence. If we found a boy, how can we know he was "fast" asleep...

It's either:
"We found the boy asleep."
or
"The boy was fast asleep."

but the 2 are incompatible...

How can you know he was "fast" asleep if you just "found" that boy asleep ?

I'm not a native but I did learn that "fast asleep" is a set phrase to mean "totally asleep"
