"Tom met Mary for the first time three years ago." would be simply translated as トムは3年前にメアリーに初めて会った。 (I somewhat don't really like this, though.)

That would just be the same sentence with a different word order. I don't think it makes much of a difference.

日本語の文は「3年前」に重点があります。
Tom met Mary for the first time three years ago. というと淡々と事実を述べているだけではありませんか?
