Closer to Tom is good at swimming.

Japanese has a word for the competitive swimmer but since it lacks the "verb + er= a person who does what is explained by the verb" feature in English, there is no word equivalent of "swimmer" but a "swimming person";And the later, as it seems in English, "Tom is a good swimming person " would not do for some reason.

If Tom is a competitive swimmer, ”トムはいい水泳選手だ。” becomes a more accurate translation.

Or alternatively, "トムは良いスイマーだ" could be used but then, in what sense he is good could becomes a question; You could actually say "トムはグッドスイマーだ。" to avoid this complexity and you can still get what you want to say across. If you are willing to go this far, however, why not just say "トム イズ ア グッドスイマー"?
