He was just asking whether it shouldn’t be ‘I’m not going’ rather than ‘I not going’, which you had written originally. Maybe you spotted that yourself and corrected it before seeing his comment. The asterisk is often used in comments to mark words that are missing in the sentence or should be corrected.
Using contradictions is perfectly fine, of course. ☺
