
Isn't there a distinction in this particular kind of sentences between:
"En halua sormusta" -> "I don't want [a ring/rings]"
and
"En halua sormuksen" -> "I don't want [the ring]"
Or is it because as a negative sentence you can only have a partitive case?

It is the last one: it because as a negative sentence you can only have a partitive case?
In the positive sentence there is a difference between cases.
