There are two sentences I think might be decent. How about either of these? (I don't have quite enough confidence in my Japanese to be sure.)

- Tom, who lost his job, started gambling to try to get his mind off his downheartedness.
- Tom, who lost his job, started gambling to try to take his mind off his worries.

My worry is that "downheartedness" is seemingly accurate, but I've never used the word myself, so I'm not comfortable recommending it here.

なるほど。「やるせない」もそれほど日常的に使う言葉ではないですが、もうちょっと使われる英単語を探してもよさそうですね。
his worries を使うとさすがにちょっと意味が広すぎる気がします。

chagrin とか使わないですかねえ。フランス語では間々見かける気がしますが。
案外 frustration は悪くないかもしれません。
