Is "girlfriend-przyjaciółka" the right translation here? My Polish teacher said przyjaciel/przyjaciółka means close male/female friend, not boyfriend/girlfriend, but I don't really understand how it works.

ashmoran, you're right. "girlfriend" doesn't mean "przyjaciółka". However, sometimes we use this word in a bit more official talks or when we don't want to tell about the girlfriend directly.

I would change the sentence and I think "jego nowa dziewczyna" is much better translation, but it's not necessary, I think.

This is interesting.
The ambiguity surrounding words describing 'boyfriend' and 'girlfriend' seems to occur in many languages.

Here's another set of sentences with the same girlfriend/boyfriend translation issue: http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentences/show/1453374

I've added an alternative translation.
