Пример слегка искусственный, но явление вполне реальное.
Хочу обратить внимание изучающих, что "чего" (род. п.) в разговорной речи может не только заменять "что" (вин. п.), но и иметь отдельный смысл "почему?" (с различным оттенком в зависимости от интонации).
Таким образом, "чего отмечаем?" может быть не только "что отмечаем?", но и "почему отмечаем?" (напр., "чего отмечаем (победу), состязание-то ещё не кончилось!").
