Wondering whether this is better translated as "Sometimes I am an enigma to myself" or "Sometimes I am even an enigma to myself". What do you think? Does "selbst" here act like "self" in "myself", or does it show emphasis like the word "even", or maybe both?

"Sometimes I am an enigma to myself" is right.

By the way, it's common to say "Das ist mir ein Rätsel" or "Sie ist und bleibt für mich ein Rätsel". Die obige Version mit "Fragezeichen" gewinnt (meiner Meinung nach) ihren Charme gerade daraus, dass sie nicht den Standard-Ausdruck verwendet. (Sie ist aber ein völlig korrekter und sinnvoller Satz.)
