Hi CK, and haven't you been busy!
I'm grateful, on behalf of Tatoeba, for all the corrections you're posting but I think you are going too far in some cases - like this one. I think that "He believed the Earth round." is valid, but old-fashioned, English.
In the interest of maintaining a diverse range of language usage I suggest you do not change "correct but formal/old-fashioned/idiomatic" sentences into simpler equivalents. If you feel the sentence may be difficult for second language learners then you can add an alternative instead of having only one version.
For technical reasons it is best to do this as
a) change original English sentence to new version
b) add old version of English sentence as a new translation of the Japanese sentence.
If you do that then only the new version will be seen from WWWJDIC, but the old version will be available to those using Tatoeba directly.
If you are unsure whether a sentence needs changing or not you can post a comment on it.
