Tom is a horse, isn't he?

I was thinkig of Tom as an athlete. I realise "withering burst" is used for racehorses but it can also be used for humans.

The term is used in this article http://www.sporting-heroes.net/...ympics_a08353/
to describe the withering burst put on by Gerhard Hennige (Ger) to snatch the silver medal in the 400m Hurdles at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City.
