hmmm my Chinese friend think that sentence is weird, i mean the sentence itself.

They are strange; this type of sentence is what is called a Chengyu, and I was wondering of their validity here on Tatoeba. I think the Wikipedia article could explain far better than I:

I know what is a Chengyu :), it's just the two/three Chinese native friends I've asked didn't recognize it as Chengyu, hence I was questioning the meaning of the sentence.

I believe it has to do with a harmonious couple being one with a southern man and a northern woman; how bringing families from far apart promotes peace, cooperation, and prosperity between far away lands.
