Oni povas lerni lingvon. Oni povas studi lingvon. La diferencon montras la vortaro.

Mi komprenas la aferon tiel:
Studentoj studas lingvon, se ili akiras sciencajn, teoriajn sciojn pri ĝi. Ili lernas lingvon, por akiri la kapablon (praktike) uzi ĝin.
Studentoj, kies studofako estas la koncerna lingvo, kutime (aŭ ni diru espereble) faras ambaŭ. Aliaj studentoj plej ofte "nur" lernas ĝin.

Sed mi komprenas "lerni" kiel pasiva ago. Kiam oni enmigras al alia lando, oni lernas la novan lingvon. Por akiri konon en nova lingvo aktive, oni kutime prenas kurson pro studi gxin.
Eble mi eraris.
