
I assume that the English sentence was translated from the French since the English just sounds off: it sounds like Pierre was just drenched all of a sudden. The French paints a much less incongruous picture of the state of being numb having gone on for a while.

I don't know French at all, but to make the English sound a little more natural, the following would perhaps work.
By the time Pierre Gringoire reached the Place de Grèves, he was drenched.
I don't know if this matches the French or not.
Lorsque Pierre Gringoire arriva sur la place de Grève, il était transi.
