że był chory --> że jest chory

w języku polskim nie ma następstwa czasów w mowie zależnej, więc takie zdanie, choć zrozumiałe, jest gramatycznie niepoprawne i niezbyt naturalne (sugeruje, że Tom udawał, że był chory wcześniej w przeszłości)
