the rebel leader said --> the exhausted rebel leader said,

forward to the end --> forward to the bitter end

The German "übermüdete", the French "épuisé" and the Esperanto "trolaciĝinta" all mean "exhausted/worn out/over-weary."

French "funeste" means "harmful" or "disastrous,", German "bitteren" and Esperanto "amara" both mean "bitter."
