「聴く」の方がより一般的みたいですね。訂正します。
ぼくはモーツァルトを聴くけれどトマトは聞くだけだろ、という気がしていたのですが、トマトに失礼だったようです。

The German and Russian translations don't use a word for "listen", either.


I wonder if they do this kind of thing in English-speaking countries in the first place.

However, it's perfectly imaginable to speak English looking at these tomatoes in Japan.
