Having recently learned and thoroughly verified that the French word “pingouin” does not in fact mean “penguin”, I thought I should add a better translation of at least one of the sentences containing it.

auk is a large family = [fra]Alcidés, that encompass [fra]les pingouins (small and large) but also the puffins and other species.
I don't think you can consider it matches, because we don't call puffins [fra]les pingouins...

But you're right [eng]penguin ≠ [fra]pingouin

[eng]penguin = [fra]manchot

So the link you saw is wrong and I'm going to unlink it.

I first requested its author to change the translation in French.

Hmm, now that you point that out, I suppose I should have gone with “razorbill” in the first place, since that’s the only living species that “pingouin” can refer to, so it’s a closer fit than “auk”, even though “razorbill” actually translates to “petit pingouin”.

I’m open to other suggestions for a good English translation for “pingouin” though. Alternatively, this could be deleted on the grounds that it’s very specific vocabulary, but I’m not sure if that’s a good reason for deleting a sentence.

Il y a les petits pingouins et les grands. Il est bien possible qu'aucun mot anglais ne les comprennent tous les deux...

obviously, [fra]le grand pingouin = [eng]the great auk

et puis il y a les pingouins torda...
