This is the famous first sentence of "The Pillow Book" of Sei Shonagon, probably started in 994 AD and completed sometime after 1000. Ivan Morris makes the English more explicit, "In spring it is the dawn that is most beautiful", but the shorter version seems more Sei Shonagon-like as well as following Strunk and White ("Omit needless words!").
