Como está, equivale a: A tradução dele é fiel à (tradução) original.

Você por acaso pensa que a frase inglesa "His translation is faithful to the original" é o mesmo que "His translation is faithful to the original translation"?

Eu acho que nesse caso "ao original" fica melhor, porque no inglês a sentença é um substantivo. E em português tendemos sempre a usar no masculino ao nos referirmos à versão original. Sempre traduzimos um original e não uma original. =P
