It seems like mistranslated sentence. I can't say anything about the Hebrew sentence, but the Esperanto one, which translation the Hebrew sentense is, means "Life is a flame that death smothers", not vice versa. Also it's more logical, cause a flame can be smothered, but a flame can't smother anything.

In the Hebrew, the verb is feminine, which means that the subject is "flame" (which is feminine) rather than "death" (which is masculine). So that would suggest that the Hebrew (which I translated) is a mistranslation of the Esperanto. I'll leave a note pointing to this discussion on the Hebrew sentence.
