Is it commonly used in the area where you live?

I am in the US. :-) My sentences are Turkish-centric. :-) I was communicating with a Turkish apartment owner in Istanbul and she used the word "flat" in her reply. This website also uses "flat" although "apartment" is also used elsewhere.
