"late" is an adjective. A better English translation for HU "a késést" or EO "la malfruon" would be "the delay."

--> I felt very sorry about the delay.

To tell the truth it is not clear what did the writer think of. It's not a typical Hungarian sentence. We never say like this. We could say:

„Nagyon sajnálom, hogy elkéstem.”

or in the past tense

„Nagyon sajnáltam, hogy elkéstem.”

I associated to "I'm sorry I'm late." or "Excuse my being late.". This „késés” with „t” at the end of the noun is objective case. It's not clear who did the delay. So I could edit the sentence but it doesn't make any sense.
